about

This is a rough recording of a song that I've never gotten around to a studio to produce a polished version, which is typical.

I wrote the song after the death of the mother of a friend that was killed by a drunk driver. When I attended the memorial, the minister asked us to "release her" by blowing out the candles we were holding. A week or so later, the daughter took her ashes to Eastern Europe and scattered them in a river in Budapest, or Prague, I forget.

The daughter brought me back a gift, an ink drawing of a cathedral, and she told me about scattering the ashes. I went home that night and wrote the song.

I included the mother's name in the lyrics but decided to make it more universal by taking out her name. I've sang it at a couple of funerals since.

lyrics

ashes now
did we really let you go
when we blew the candles out
or will you be released
into the wind
or will you be watching the ashes scattered about
you will always be
my best friend
and a great big beautiful smile
you're my will to win
inspiration to live
i miss you so much though you've been gone for just a little while

too soon
too soon
too soon
gone too soon

morning finds me
still awake
and a day's distractions i welcome now
time will come when i will
sleep in pleasant dreams
with you in my heart i'll make it somehow

too soon
too soon
too soon
gone too soon
